Orthodontics FAQs
Why is orthodontic treatment important?
Crooked and crowded teeth are hard to clean and maintain, making them prime targets for tooth decay, gum disease and other health concerns. Improper facial and jaw alignment can put a lot of stress on the jaw and the gum tissue and the bone that supports the teeth, and even cause chronic headaches or face or neck pain. Inordinate erosion of the tooth surface and inability to chew properly are additional reasons for treatment.
Straight teeth help an individual to effectively bite, chew and speak. Straight teeth contribute to healthy teeth and gums. Properly aligned teeth and jaws may alleviate or prevent physical health problems. Teeth that work better also tend to look better. An attractive smile is a pleasant “side effect” of orthodontic treatment.
An attractive smile is a wonderful asset. It contributes to self-esteem, self-confidence and self-image—important at any age. A pleasing appearance is a vital component of self-confidence. A person’s self-esteem often improves as orthodontic treatment brings teeth, lips and face into proportion. In this way, orthodontic treatment can benefit social and career success, as well as improve a person’s general attitude toward life.
Who needs braces?
Most everyone can benefit from braces. Initial evaluation for children is recommended at age 7 and adults can be treated at any age. Preventive Maintenance, a limited orthodontic treatment begun around age 7, can simplify or even eliminate the need for full orthodontic treatment, since it's designed to encourage jaw growth and correct problems early. Today, orthodontic treatment is a viable option for almost any adult. It is well recognized that when left untreated, many orthodontic problems may become worse.
You’ll be pleased to learn that orthodontic treatment will fit in with your current lifestyle- you can sing, play a musical instrument, dine out, and even have your picture taken. Western Dental Services offers Clear, Gold and Invisalign as alternatives braces choices.
What causes orthodontic problems?
Most types of problems are inherited, such as crowding of or too much space between teeth. Some abnormalities are acquired through trauma (accidents), thumb or pacifier sucking, dental disease or even airway obstruction by tonsils and adenoids.
How long does treatment usually take?
Since everyone is different, some people may respond to treatment more quickly than others do. Generally, the active treatment time (wearing braces) ranges from one to three years depending on the complexity of the case. Preventative procedures may only take a few months.
Are there less noticeable braces?
Yes, today's braces are significantly smaller, have a lower profile and are more efficient. In addition to metal, braces now can be clear or even colored.
