The ADA wants you to know that children should see a dentist every six months. That’s why every February, they sponsor National Children’s Dental Health Month to raise awareness about the importance of oral health. They know that developing good oral health habits early in life will lead to a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums.

Children are susceptible to developing cavities if their brushing and flossing routine is not established at a young age.  In fact, tooth decay is the most common chronic childhood disease — five times more common than asthma and seven times more common than hay fever in 5- to 17-year-olds, according to the California Health Care Foundation.

The good news is, the risk of decay can be reduced by nearly 80% in molars with the application of dental sealants, a clear, thin protective coating applied to the teeth. Sealants are key in reducing and preventing cavities. This is especially important when it comes to your child's dental health since, according to a report issued by the Center for Disease Control, "school-age children without sealants have almost three times more cavities than children with sealants." (October 2016).

There are other cavity-preventing tips and treatments for children that you can learn about from your dentist, like fluoride treatments and regular cleanings to remove plaque and dangerous bacteria left behind by normal brushing. Your best option is to make an appointment for your child for an exam. First appointments should be made when the first tooth appears, or no later than one-year-old.

Let’s celebrate! Many dental offices support National Children’s Dental Health Month with special promotions for the month. For example, in every Western Dental and Brident office you’ll find special in-office activities for children, including a coloring contest, raffle and social media giveaways.

Kids can submit their drawings of “Pearly,” our mascot, or enter a raffle to win prizes. In addition, just post a selfie and tag with #wdkidshealthysmiles for a chance to win additional prizes.

There are three ways to win:

  1. Submit a raffle forms by coming into any office, and offices will draw winners to receive a prize. Anyone can enter!
  2. Kids can enter their drawings of “Pearly,” our mascot, when they’re in the office (drawing entry forms are available in every office). Winners will be awarded prizes.
  3. Or post a pic to #wdkidshealthysmiles for a chance to win prizes
