Scaling & root planing
for gum disease
Scaling and root planing are deep-cleaning treatments
that remove plaque and tartar to support healthier
gums and overall oral health.
What to expect during your treatment
Protect your smile and stop the progression of gum disease. We use a local anesthetic during your scaling and root planing treatment so your deep clean is pain-free.
Professional scaling
and cleaning
We scrape away plaque and tartar on the teeth and down below the gumline.
Planing to smooth
out gum roots
We plane, or smooth, your teeth’s roots to help gums refit snugly to your teeth.
Specialty flush
of bad bacteria
We use a device to flush your mouth with antimicrobial medication to eliminate bacteria.
Local antibiotics
(as needed)
We may apply an antibiotic that stays active for up to four weeks to prevent infections.

Scaling & root planing FAQs
Your dentist or hygienist will numb the area with a local anesthetic to help make scaling and root planing as pain-free as possible. You may feel some soreness for a few days after treatment, but it typically goes away within a week.
Depending on the amount of plaque and tartar buildup on your teeth, a typical scaling and root planing appointment can take anywhere from 1 to 2 hours. Your appointment may be split up for more intensive deep cleanings.
Gum disease starts when bacteria feed on leftover food and sugars, forming plaque. Without regular brushing and cleanings, plaque builds up, hardens, and begins to damage your gums.
Western Dental offers a variety of at-home dental care kits designed to support gum health between visits. Kits may include items like prescription-strength toothpaste, an antibacterial rinse, and specially recommended toothbrushes. Ask your dentist which kit is right for you.
Dental anxiety is common—and we’re here to help. We offer a calm, supportive environment and sedation options to help you feel more comfortable.
