When it comes to keeping teeth clean, there are many options from which to choose, from a good old fashioned manual toothbrush to fancy electric versions that have different cleaning modes and  connect to phone apps. While the key to keeping teeth clean is proper brushing  techniques twice per day, here are some benefits of each of the most common categories of toothbrushes.

Electric:

  • Vibration adds more movements every time you move your toothbrush across your tooth surface
  • Oscillating (spinning) toothbrushes work better than vibrating toothbrushes
  • In general, electric toothbrushes are better at removing plaque
  • May be easier for people with limited mobility
  • Some have built-in timers to help you brush teeth long enough
  • May be easier for people with braces.

Manual:

  • Convenient to buy at many local stores
  • Cheaper than electric toothbrushes
  • Easy to find in different shapes and sizes to fit your mouth
  • Still effective at removing plaque
  • Easy to take with you
  • Do not need recharging

The good news? The American Dental Association (ADA) says both electric and manual toothbrushes are effective at removing oral plaque. So, regardless of which method you choose, remember to brush at least two minutes twice per day with a soft bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste.

Remember to book your next exam now.
